Cracked Seat Tube

By Bob F.

from Williamsburg, VA

About Me

Comments:

On Sept. 8, 2016 I was getting ready to take this bike out for a ride when I noticed a very large crack on the seat post about 2 inches under the locking nut. Upon close inspection I could see that the crack went all of the through the tube and about 3/4 of the way around its circumference. The crack must have happened very recently because I would have surely noticed it before now. It's not the sort of thing that would slip anyone's attention. I only rode this bike locally on the Capital Trail and a few times on the Colonial Parkway. I am in my early 60s, of average weight (175 lbs) and height (5'11"). I never abused this bike in any way. I never took it off road. I have returned the bike to Bike Beat and am now waiting to see what Trek will do. I was told that they guarantee their frames. We shall see.

10000 Miles -- Cracked Seat Tube

By Bob F.

from Williamsburg, VA

About Me

Comments:

I bought this bike at Bike Beat in early 2012. I put just under 10,000 miles on it in that time. I only used it for road biking. My average ride was between 30-50 miles. It's a comfortable ride for those distances. I never had any problems with any of the components. My only complaint is that it is not built for speed. I could get it up to 20mph, but found it impossible to maintain that speed for long periods. The average speed was between 15-18mph. Now for the really bad part. I was getting it ready for a ride the other day when I noticed a serious crack in the seat tube two inches beneath the top tube. The crack is through and through and quite visible. It extends about 3/4 of the way around the tube. I do not know when the crack occurred, but it must have been recently because I would have surely noticed it before. It's very hard to miss. It is fortunate that I noticed it when I did because if it had extended any further it could have caused the post to snap completely. I do not know what might have occurred had I been riding it at the time. At the very least I might have fallen off. At the worst? Who can say?

      Comments:

I went from a 2016 Trek FX 5 to the Domane 2.0 and what a difference! I feel like I can ride this bike all day. The minutes I park it after a 30 mile ride, I want to get back on a hour later and ride it again. The Matte Black color with red accent is beautiful and looks much more expensive. The only thing I don't like is the no name brakes. Feels like it takes longer to slow down.

I ride this bike every weekend at least 30-50 miles. I used to be exhausted at the end of my ride with my old bike which is also a Trek but this bike seems to want to keep going and take me along with it.

          Comments:

My wife and I just purchased two Domane 2.0's. These are our first "real" road bikes and we couldn't be happier with the purchase. The ISOspeed rear coupler and forks really smooth out and virtually eliminate the road noise found on the bad roads here in North Texas. While we don't have more expensive bikes to compare the Domane 2.0 to these are exactly what we were looking for to help us reach our goal of completing the century rides and hopefully ride in the Hotter Than Hell next year.
